Hat Mikroplastik einen Nutzen in der Kosmetik?

Why microplastics have no place on your skin!

Microplastics: Zero cosmetic benefit, maximum environmental damage

It actually seems logical to use only ingredients for cosmetics that have any benefit for the care of skin and hair. However, this ideal conception misses the reality. Microplastics are among these dispensable ingredients, which are processed in vast quantities and contained in countless products. The far-reaching consequences for the environment are known and some health risks are also suspected. However, this has not yet been 100% scientifically proven, so many cosmetics manufacturers continue to use microplastics.

Tiny darlings of the conventional cosmetics industry

On the outside, a cosmetic presents itself as environmentally friendly with its biodegradable packaging, while in the formula there is environmentally harmful microplastic. It could hardly be more contradictory. But this is the reality. Microparticles of nylon, polyethylene, polyurethane and similar plastics are among the popular ingredients used by conventional cosmetics manufacturers. The current figures speak for themselves, as brands in Germany alone process at least 500 tons of the particles, which have a maximum diameter of five millimeters, in their products each year. In most cases, the microplastics contained are even smaller or gel-like in the processed form.

Meaningless for the caring or decorative effect of cosmetics

In peelings or shower gels, colorful microplastics remove dead skin flakes; in creams, they act as a binder, contributing to a homogeneous cosmetic texture; and in lip gloss, the plastic promotes hold. These are just three examples of the reasons for its use. Basically, however, it is always a matter of the aesthetic presentation or the simplified manufacturing process of the cosmetics, for which there would be many alternatives. For the decorative effect of make-up or the effect of care products, the ingredient makes no sense at all.

At the same time, it is certainly not in line with your wishes to sand your skin with plastic beads during a wellness day or to decorate your lips with liquid plastic for a date. However, this peculiar act usually goes unnoticed, as the technical terms are lost in the endless list of ingredients and the manufacturers do not advertise them aggressively. There is no reason for this in view of the ineffectiveness. In addition, manufacturers who use microplastics are criticized from all sides. In principle, however, microplastics are not harmful to your skin .

From the shower to the waters to the seafood pizza

While the use of microplastics in body care initially only gives you a strange feeling, the particles enter the environment in rough quantities via a wide variety of pathways. Particularly hard hit are the world's oceans and their creatures, whose ecosystems are heavily polluted by the plastic particles. In addition to microplastics from cosmetic products, which can only be partially removed by wastewater treatment plants, similar microparticles are also produced when plastic waste decomposes.

It becomes unappetizing when the cycle is considered: The microplastics from cosmetics end up in the oceans via the sewage system, enter the food chain of fish or seafood as suspended particles, and are then eaten by humans. Culinary dreams definitely sound different. However, it is not only fish lovers who are affected. In various studies, residues of microplastics have been detected in vegetable fields, soft drinks and dairy products, among others.

General ban is already being called for

The extent to which the plastic itself is harmful to health is still hotly debated by experts. At the moment, it is not assumed that it is harmful to your skin. However, it is clear that some substances classified as harmful to health adhere well to microplastics and could thus enter the body. The devastating effect of plastic waste on the ecosystems of water bodies, without which human life on earth is not possible, has already been proven. On top of that, the production of microplastics requires abundant petroleum, whose supplies are finite.

Therefore, avoiding cosmetic lines that contain microplastics is about far more than personal well-being. By incorporating completely unnecessary ingredients, resources are wasted and major environmental damage is accepted. Around the world, cosmetics manufacturers that incorporate microplastics are being harshly criticized by environmental organizations and government officials. Some companies have reacted and partially or completely changed their formulations. Many labels in all price segments, however, are defying the law and ignoring the environmental problem. Laws for a general ban are already being discussed in several countries. However, due to the diversity of microplastics, the problem is very difficult to grasp, which stands in the way of the legal effectiveness of rules.

Individual initiative required

The thought of microplastics is unpleasant and unappetizing. Nature suffers enormously from exposure to the plastic particles, which, on top of that, serve no purpose and may also pose health risks to humans. This will probably be investigated more closely in the coming years and studies. Therefore, there is actually only one conclusion for reflective people: as long as no law prevents the processing, cosmetic products with microplastics collect a basket. After all, we prove that high-quality hair cosmetics and skin care can do without the questionable ingredient. Because we love cosmetics - but without substances that your skin doesn't need!
