The perfect products for your autumn routine
Changeable weather
We're saying goodbye to summer, and while many are mourning the loss of brightness and sunshine, the change of seasons also leaves its mark on our skin. The air is becoming drier, and what our skin needs most now is moisture. You read that everywhere. But wasn't moisture also important in summer? And wasn't it often dry in intense heat? This naturally raises the question: where exactly is the big difference between the two seasons?
It's true that dryness in autumn leads to moisture loss in the skin, but that's a very simplistic explanation. It's about much more than just dryness. Especially during the transition from summer to autumn, we experience significant temperature fluctuations, similar to spring. During the day, it can still be 20°C or more. In the evenings, at night, and in the early morning, however, it's considerably colder. Added to this are changes in humidity. Not only is the weather outside changeable, alternating between dry and humid conditions, but the indoor climate also varies. The heating season begins, bringing with it significantly drier air, to which the skin isn't yet accustomed. Furthermore, on warm autumn days, heating is often unnecessary and is switched off for a few days. This also leads to fluctuations in humidity.
What changes for the skin in autumn?
So much for the causes; let's move on to the effects. Colder temperatures cause blood vessels to constrict. These aren't dramatic or cause for concern, but they do lead to reduced blood flow to the skin. The increased sebum production from summer is reduced. This can be particularly unpleasant for dry skin, as it loses the benefit of increased sebum production and suddenly feels tight again due to dryness. The other three skin types can also experience a duller, sallower appearance. Similar to how it was in summer due to sweating, skin loses more moisture in autumn. The only difference is that this is now due to the dry environment and often also to the dry air from heating systems.
Adjustments to the skincare routine
So what's the solution? The shortest answer is: moisturize and protect the skin barrier. But we don't want to leave you with such a general answer, so here are a few specific tips. The best active ingredients for autumn are ceramides , hyaluronic acid , squalane, shea butter, and lipids; the latter preferably in the form of natural oils .
When cleansing your skin, it may now be more sensitive and therefore require gentler or less frequent cleansing. Cleansers that provide moisture are particularly beneficial now.
Just like in summer, a toner is recommended to compensate for moisture loss. It is particularly effective in combination with a hydrating serum, ideally one containing hyaluronic acid, as this can bind a lot of moisture in the skin.
Day and night creams should also have moisturizing properties and support the skin barrier. Creams can now be richer than in summer. You should still pay attention to your skin type and which cream feels comfortable on your skin. If you used a light day cream in summer, you can now switch to a richer version. Oily skin, on the other hand, often doesn't need additional care in summer and can now use a light cream.
Beyond the daily routine, there is often an increased need for eye and hand care. The skin around the eyes is particularly thin and therefore susceptible to weather-related damage. In addition, most people tend to experience increased fatigue and dark circles in autumn. This is perfectly normal. An eye cream like our Refining Eye Cream is incredibly helpful in fading dark shadows and restoring radiance to the skin. Hands are also frequently stressed, as they are usually exposed to the cold and have to cope with temperature fluctuations between indoors and outdoors. Our Calming Moisturizer or Rich Care Moisturizer are ideal for dry and chapped hands. They absorb quickly and leave the skin feeling soft and supple.
For quick relief from dryness and flakiness, we recommend exfoliating scrubs. Additionally, a rich, moisturizing mask like the Rich Hydration Mask helps to replenish lost moisture.
Below we present our favorites for both morning and evening routines in autumn.
Morning routine for autumn
You can start your morning routine with the Hydrating Cream Cleanser . As the name suggests, it's a moisturizing cleanser. It contains valuable ceramides, which – as described above – are particularly beneficial in autumn.
Afterwards, you can use the aloe vera spray as a moisturizing toner, just like in summer. The ingredients in the spray also have a skin-soothing effect, which can be particularly beneficial for irritated skin.
The Hyaluron Booster is worthwhile immediately afterwards, because the hyaluronic acids it contains help to retain moisture in the skin, and the booster itself also provides some.
In summer, less was more to avoid the heavy feeling on the skin from using too many products. Now that skin needs more protection and support, an extra booster is perfectly acceptable. We particularly recommend both our Calming Serum and the Barrier Booster for autumn. The Calming Serum is ideal if your skin is prone to irritation due to the change in weather. Its light formula soothes irritated skin. The Barrier Booster, on the other hand, is a good choice if your skin barrier is severely compromised and therefore unable to properly perform its protective function. Which booster is right for you depends on your individual skin condition and needs. You might even benefit from using both products. In that case, it's advisable to apply the Barrier Booster in the evening, as it's a bit richer.
As an intermediate step, you can then apply a small amount of the Refining Eye Cream around your eyes to protect the delicate skin there. An amount about the size of a lentil is sufficient for the area around both eyes.
Last but not least, the day cream. In our range, you can choose between Calming Moisturizer and Rich Care Moisturizer. While we particularly recommend the latter for dry skin, other skin types can use it just as well. The Calming Moisturizer has long been a classic among our products. Both moisturizers contain hydrating squalane and come in a convenient airless dispenser.
Evening routine for autumn
You can also use the Hydrating Cream Cleanser again in the evening for facial cleansing.
If your skin is particularly dehydrated due to the weather conditions, you can use the Hyaluron Booster again in the evening.
In the evening , calming serums or barrier boosters are also beneficial. Calming serums are similar to hyaluronic acid boosters in that if your skin reacts very sensitively, you can use them both morning and evening. The same applies to barrier boosters. Some people have a very weakened skin barrier and can tolerate a boost twice a day for strengthening. However, some users find the barrier booster too rich for morning use. Since richer products are generally more suitable for evening use, the barrier booster can also be used in that case.
Just like in the morning, a small amount of the Refining Eye Cream helps to regenerate the skin around the eyes in the evening.
For nighttime care, we offer the Night Cream and theRich Night Moisturizer . Both contain ceramides. In the Night Cream , these are combined with the slow-aging ingredient retinol, while in the Rich Night Moisturizer, they are combined with nourishing shea butter.
Extra care in between
Just as in summer, we recommend our lip balm for lip care. However, for autumn, its UV protection is less important than its ability to gently care for lips that are dry and chapped due to the weather.
Our jojoba oil is also excellent for dry lips. Just one drop applied to the lips is incredibly soothing. A few drops of this natural oil can also be easily mixed into your moisturizer for those who find their day or night cream not rich enough. Jojoba oil provides the skin with valuable lipids.
Since skin is more prone to small flakes in autumn due to dryness, an exfoliant like our Exfoliate Booster with various AHAs and salicylic acid (BHA) is recommended. For best results, use the booster one to two evenings a week. In addition to its exfoliating effect as a chemical peel, the booster also makes the skin look less dull and gives it a natural glow.
To counteract moisture loss, we recommend using the Rich Hydration Mask as needed. It contains a variety of moisturizing ingredients and provides a particularly long-lasting hydration effect. Alternatively, it can also be used as a night cream.
